Dr. Dan Mertens

Department of Management and Marketing

Dr. Daniel P. Mertens is an associate professor of Management in the College of Business and Industry at Jacksonville State University.

Dr. Mertens was awarded a Ph.D. in Management from the University of Arizona where he had also earned a Master of Business Administration degree with emphases in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Colorado State University.�

Prior to his graduate study, Dr. Mertens worked as a commercial broker and also worked as a banker and financial planner.�

In his academic career, Dr. Mertens has taught Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral-level business management courses. He has also taught graduate courses at Duquesne University, George Fox University and Fu Jen University (Taipei, Taiwan). �Dr. Mertens won the SGA Faculty Award in 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2008-2009 school years. He is the first faculty member to win the award consecutively in the schools 160 year history. Dr. Mertens also was inducted into The Business Strategy Game Hall of Fame as a Master Professor of Strategic Management in the Fall of 2009. �Out of more than 4,000 registered BSG instructors, he was a unanimous selection for Master Professor status by placing a Grand Champion team in the Best-Strategy Invitational competition.

Dr. Mertens has several publications on assorted management topics and presented numerous scholarly lectures in the U.S and Europe. His research interests include strategic principles, human judgment, individual and organizational decision making, and organizational behavior. �In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Mertens is a business consultant, specializing in strategic planning, strategic implementation, and organization behavior issues. �He enjoys volunteering as a consultant for non-profits.

His professional affiliations include memberships in business societies, such as the Academy of Management, for whom he serves as a reviewer for both the Strategic Management and Organizational Behavior divisions.�

Dr. Mertens has lead numerous student research trips regarding multiple business, cultural, political, and social aspects of foreign countries. Dr. Mertens lead the group of students on a study tour of the researched foreign area, where they visited important historical sites and attended lectures on business, political, and cultural issues. The trips have previously included travel to places such as London, England; Prague, Czech Republic; Seville, Spain; Vienna, Austria; Krakow, Poland; Belfast, Republic of Northern Ireland; and Dublin, Ireland.
