On behalf of the School of Business and Industry and  Jacksonville State University, welcome to the class.  Let me share with you a little bit about myself.

I am a native of the state, born and raised in Sheffield, AL (northwest corner of the state).  Most of my extended family and parents still live there.

Education.  I received my BS degree (Major: Management, Minor: Music) from the University of North Alabama.  While working on this degree, I worked part-time for a small manufacturing firm (McDaniel & Co.) in Florence, AL.  After completing my Bachelor of Science degree, I went to work full time for McDaniel & Co. and started work on my Masters in Business Administration (MBA).  After completing the MBA, I took a short break from school.  After this break (9 months), I started the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) program in Business Administration at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR.  While in the program, I taught undergraduate classes in Organizational Behavior and Business Communications.  I completed the coursework in four fun filled years.  In 1989, I accepted a position at Jacksonville State University.  By 1991, I had completed the dissertation and successfully defended it in December of that year. My Ph.D. dissertation was entitled:  The Impact of an Absence Control Policy on Absenteeism, Performance, and Satisfaction:  A Replication of Baum and Youngblood (1975).  This research focused on the social aspect of the use of punishment with the main emphasis on what others think when you don’t punish wrongdoers (good stuff).  I graduated in May 1991, Major: Management, Minors: Marketing & Sociology.  I completed my post graduate studies at the University of South Carolina (International Management) in 1993.

Jacksonville State University (JSU).  I’ve been with JSU since 1989.  I’m a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Management.  I’m probably here for the duration of my academic career or until the University no longer needs my services.  JSU is an enjoyable place to work with an accommodating administration and staff.

Teaching is 50% of my annual evaluation and I teach a variety of courses:

COURSES TAUGHT

The next element of my annual evaluation is research and I try to keep busy in this area:

My wife is Linda Hearn.  She is the General Manager for the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce.  If you're ever in the Chamber in Anniston, AL, say hello and drop off a resume.  She usually knows who is or isn’t hiring in this area.

We have two kids, a boy and a girl.  Both are red heads and better athletes than me.  Let the fun begin.

Their mother is still the top athlete in the family.  Distance is her thing.

HOBBIES

My hobbies branch into two main areas: shooting sports and cycling. In the shooting sports, I’m active with the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA).  The local club is Talladega Practical Shooters at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park.  I am the club President and run the matches.  You are all welcome to come join us for some trigger pulling.  Third Saturday of each month.  Just let me know and I will send you some information

Most of the time I compete in the pistol division.

CMP Pistol

I also compete in the rifle division.

And, the shotgun division. My highest finishes (locally, regionally, and nationally) have been in the shotgun division.

As you might guess, this sport is an acquired taste and is not for everyone.

Some bird hunting thrown in to keep things in perspective.

We also play airsoft.  We tend to take it way too serious.

My other hobby involves cycling.

Recently, I have moved into Mountain Biking.  My son is significantly better than I am in the dirt.  Fun activity to share.  Interestingly, I have donated more blood to the dirt on Coldwater Mountain while mountain biking than to any activity.  Still love it.

Braden and Mark

On a less painful note, one of the other more important women in my life is Amy Vaughn.  That's her in the following picture. Amy is the secretary for the Department of Management and Marketing. I spend a significant amount of my time in her office.  If you come by to see me and I'm not in SOBI Complex Building 1 RM 108 (my office), try RM 106 (her office).  She is also the go to person if you need to get in touch with me and the normal channels are not working. She may not admit it; but, she generally knows where I am at all times and can almost always get a message to me if she wants to do so. Be nice and offer treats. Her contact information is as follows: (256) 782-5787 and vaughn@jsu.edu.

Well, that’s a little about me and mine.  Thanks for the visit.
